My journey with God began fifty three years ago when because of the love of a youth choir director and a youth Sunday School teacher, I received Jesus as my Savior. At this time my dad was an alcoholic and there where some very discouraging times for me. God provided some wonderful, caring people from my church family to encourage me and pray with me. Proverbs 3:5-6 has always been one of my favorite verses: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.” There have been many times in my spiritual walk when it wasn’t easy to “trust God” instead of my own understanding. As I matured in my Christian walk, I became more enabled to listen to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, to “trust God.” There are many characteristics that describe God’s love for us. In my journey with Him, two stand out: His faithfulness and his blessings.
Psalm 145:13 says “The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.” His faithfulness has proven true in many answers to prayer:
• My dad became a Christian when he was 68 years old
• Bob’s salvation three years after we were married
• Protection for a grandson serving in Iraq
• Two separate bi-opsies for me that were not cancerous
• Bob’s cancer “contained” – not spread
The list goes on and on. A wonderful hymn says “Count your many blessings and see what God has done.” There are so many. Too many to count really, but a few that come to mind foremost:
• Two wonderful sons and daughter-in laws who love God
• Four lovely grandchildren
• A wonderful mother who led by example of God’s love
• Christian friends
Jerimiah 29:11, - another favorite verse of mine says in part, “For I know the plans I have for you declares Lord.” If I could have gone to college, my plans were to be a teacher. I did not get to go to college, but God had a plan for me. The neat part was that it was actually “my hearts desire.” I did get to be a teacher – the best kind – a Sunday School Teacher.
A special blessing God gave me was being able to pray with a 5th grade girl in my Sunday School class to receive the Lord. Nine years later, that girl became my daughter-in law. For fifty years God allowed me to serve in Children’s ministry in various capacities; teaching, coordinating, and directing. He is still blessing!
He opened the door for me to minister in a Christian preschool teaching little ones about Him. The journey continues and I know I can count on and trust God’s faithfulness.
