”How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are!” – 1 John 3:1

”Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.” – Romans 12:10

Despite the overwhelming cultural pressures to be independent, God’s model is significantly different. Rather than pursing independence, as God’s children, we’re to pursue interdependence. Examples from the Bible abound:

  • We see interdependence in God’s own being. He exists Himself in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – in community.
  • In Genesis we see that Eve is created to live in community with Adam, who was lonely and alone. And as they’re created to cleave together and become one flesh, we see God’s heart for spiritual, emotional, and physical connection between a husband and a wife.
  • Jesus’ 12 disciples engaged in a 3 and a half year journey towards interdependence—shucking their own desires for, among other things, power and position, and learning the value of serving others and loving others.

It’s great to meet together as a large group. But the real action happens when we make the effort to journey with others. To know and be known. To love and be loved. To serve and be served.
